My HP Mini 1000

2008 was the year of the netbook craze. New releases dominated tech headlines for months. The netbook craze never caught on to me until end 2008. I had always wanted a mobile PC for quite sometime but never got myself to commit to one due to the relatively expensive price tag. Moreover, the bulky form factor made me gave it a miss. Along came the netbooks and that's when the doors opened up for me.

After sifting through streams of netbook reviews and shamelessly molested many netbooks, the Lenovo S10 & the EeePC 1000HA made it into my shortlist initially. It was 2 days before the PC fair and I happened to be on leave. I decided to survey more netbooks at Digital Mall PJ before I decide on my purchase at the PC Fair over the weekend. I stopped by AOnePlus to check out what was on display. I chanced upon the HP Mini 1000 while testing the S10 and the EeePC.

I requested one of the staff to unbox the HP Mini for me to inspect. Everything appeared fine until the netbook was powered on. I noticed minute scratches on the bottom left of the LED backlit screen. I requested the staff to give me another unit. That too had the same defect albeit not as obvious as the first. I figured if I asked the staff to unbox another one, the defect may still be there. Shame on the QC. In the end, I plonked RM1800 on the 2nd unit inclusive of 2GB RAM upgrade.

Here's my take on the HP Mini 1000 (or more specifically, the 1001TU)

  • Keyboard
  • Touchpad
  • Aesthetics
  • Screen
  • Battery
  • Heat
  • Price
  • Practicality
  • Verdict

Keyboard
The moment my fingers landed on the spacious keyboards, I knew instantly that this was the one for me. The keys were large enough to touch type. The keys register silent if not non-existent clicks which I like. I found some keys such as the "pg up pg down home end" keys a pain to use as it requires simultaneous usage of the fn key. I tend to use these keys quite often and it is frustrating. Then again, just about every netbook has 2-in-1 keys like these. Can't have it all I guess.

Touchpad
Defying convention, the right and left buttons are separated by the touchpad. This poses a problem for seasoned notebook users. I have learnt to adapt to the button placement although the occasional drag and drops frustrate me. The touchpad is vertically challenged therefore requires double the amount of vertical scrolling.

Aesthetics
The HP Mini 1000 sure is one sexy beast. The LED power and wifi switches are futuristic. The HP patented imprint swirl design on the lid distinguishes itself from the rest of the pack. Its slim and light form factor can fit effortlessly into any sling bag. The ports blend well with the ebony black chassis. A sheer pleasure to admire and feel. The predominantly black, silver and white color scheme suits my taste.

Screen
The 10.1 inch LED backlit screen is sharp and pleasant to the eyes. There are roughly 6 levels of brightness adjustable using the combo keys on the keyboard. The glossy screen hasn't bothered me too much as I use it indoors most of the time. Like all glossy screens, it is a finger print and dust magnet. The cleaning cloth is never too far from the Mini. The 1024x600 resolution is acceptable although long vertical web pages require lots of scrolling. I mitigate this inconvenience by going full screen.

Battery
Based on normal usage (web surfing and simple tasks, screen brightness level 3), the fully charged 3 cell battery lasts 2.5 hours before it depletes. Watching a 1 1/2 hour movie brings the figure down to 2 hours. The somewhat limited battery life makes it compulsory for me to ensure that a wall socket is available if I use it at wifi hotspots out there. I intend to upgrade to a 6 cell once the price stabilizes. For now, the 3 cell is sufficient.

Heat
The bottom of the Mini where the RAM slot is gets worryingly hot while playing memory intense games or watching movies. Everywhere else is just fine so long as there is sufficient ventilation.

Price
I bought the the Mini at RM1699 on Nov 08'. 9 months later, the price has dropped to RM1399. Back then it was considered pricier than the competition such as the Eee pcs and the S10. To me, it was money well spent.

Practicality

[Web Surfing]
Netbooks enable mobility and surfing on the go. That holds true if one doesn't mind the inconvenience of lugging the netbook around. Do take note however that not all places have wifi coverage, thus rendering the netbook useless if you intend to surf. So, be absolutely certain that where you're going has wifi hotspots. I remember carrying along my Mini plus all the essential accessories during a trip to Langkawi early this year with my colleagues. Wifi was scarce even in the airport and I never got to put my netbook to good use. Excess baggage. If you have subscribed to wireless broadband, my comments on web surf practicality are negligible.

[Movies]
Watching movies on the go is a joy as the speaker is loud and clear while the screen is large enough.

[Gaming]
I managed to play games such as dota and maplestory on the Mini with little to no performance degradation. The small fonts however made me squint sometimes.

Verdict
Would I recommend the HP Mini 1000? 9 months ago I would have given it a definite Yes. Today, there are better alternatives out there. Notably, the Acer Aspire One D250. All said, the HP Mini 1000 serves me well and does a great job at it.

In Pursuit of Happiness

I have a wonderful girlfriend in Bebe. A great paying job and appraisal. A wonderful family I can turn to. Plenty of expensive boy toys to keep my tail wagging. Been to vacations and explored plenty of new places. Why am I still not happy?

How do I know I am not happy? I binge eat. Sleep a lot and refuse to get out of my comfort zone. That means lazing about at home indulging in sinful past times. By sinful I mean spending hours on end playing Dota and watching movies or whip out the occasional DS Lite. I have stopped baking/cooking. I have not kicked a ball for more than 2 months. Weekend morning walks are no longer permanent fixtures. EPL weekends no longer exist. I have avoided plenty of invitations and phone calls from friends. Nothing seems to excite me anymore. I procrastinate a lot. My face has this perpetual dull expression from the long and tiresome hours at work.

Perhaps it is time to take a step back and do some soul searching, away from all the commotion out there. Given time I may realize what’s wrong and hopefully find my road to recovery from whatever it is I’m facing.

To my dearest Bebe, you mean the world to me. I am sorry I couldn’t give you what you needed the way you wanted it to be. I wish I could but I had to ask myself if I really wanted to. I do not wish to do things beyond my will. It is unfair for both of us. I feel bad when you feel neglected by my ignorance and the need to be aloof. There’s just so much I want to do for you, somehow I falter soon after. You deserve better than what you’re getting from me now. I have to love myself before I can love you. At the time of writing, I am not loving myself enough. Subconsciously wasting away bit by bit.

To my close friends whom I have selectively avoided. I have disappointed you time and again. I thank you for the invitations but there were times when I wanted to be left alone. Yes, I see the miss calls but I cannot summon the courage to call back and apologize. Guess I’m too chickened out to know how disappointed you are with me. Please bear with me in the mean time while I try to sort out the mess I am.

Still looking for the first step to recovery… Somebody, please give me a sign.

RedFox MP3 FM Modulator = Tau foo product...

A week after I sent my faulty RedFox back to the shop to claim warranty, I bought a cheaper model from RedFox at ThunderMatch Carrefour. In just 1 week, this other one died on me too! WTF!!!!

The mod was still working last night when I switched off the car engine. I bet it was my folks who mishandled the mod this time around. I can't blame them for killing it. The mod so tau foo of course la die easily. From my observation, twisting the mod while it's still powered on and plugged to the cigarette lighter short circuits the poor bugger. Not robust at all!!! Tell you what. I'll send this other guy for repair cuz it's still under warranty. When the warranty's up, no more...

NO MORE MP3 FM MODULATORS FOR ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Overprotected

Say hello to the guy that I am
You're gonna have to see through my perspective
I need to make mistakes just to learn who I am
And I don't wanna be so damn protected

There must be another way
Cause I believe in taking chances
But who am I to say what a guy is to do?
gotta need some answers

What am I to do with my life?
You will find it out don't worry
How am I supposed to know what's right?
You just gotta do it your way
I can't help the way I feel
But my life has been so overprotected

I tell them what I like
What I want
And what I don't
But everytime I do
I stand corrected
Things that I've been told
I can't believe what I hear about the world
I realize I'm overprotected

There must be another way
Cause I believe in taking chances
But who am I to say what a guy is to do?
God I need some answers

What am I to do with my life?
You will find it out don't worry
How am I supposed to know what's right?
You just gotta do it your way
I can't help the way I feel
But my life has been so o-verprotected

I don't need nobody telling me just what I wanna
What I want what what I'm gonna
Do about my destiny
I say no
Nobody's tellin me just what i wanna do
I'm so fed up with people telling me to be
Someone else but me

Just my luck... 'sien'

3 unfortunate incidents in a week is enough to convince me that I'm surrounded by 'sueh' aura. I caught the flu bug sometime last weekend. Gave me sleepless nights and wasted plenty of tissue. It's better now if you're wondering.

My RedFox MP3 FM modulator died on me Thursday night. To think that I spent so much money on that little piece of equipment and just as I was enjoying my new in-car experience, really 'sien' lor. Could barely sleep that night. No mood to work also. Anyway, I sent the device back to the shop to repair. Good thing warranty is still valid for another 2 months. Sigh, gonna be 3 weeks without my ICE.

Was watching a Korean movie on TV at Bebe's place yesterday night. Heard a loud crash just right in front of her house. Naturally we peeped outside the window. Initially we thought it was Bebe's sister who was involved in the accident, turns out it was someone else'. Upon closer inspection, I was horrified to see a motorcycle wedged under my car's ass! The rear bumper gave in and there were lots of scratches. Just my luck. The accident involved another car and a Sunway security personnel's bike. Crashed at a junction near where my car was parked. The bike bounced off the other car, flew lovingly into my car's ass. While looking on at the 2 parties involved in the crash, I wasn't nervous, scared or angry. I felt nothing. Just 'sien' that I have to go through the hassle of making a police report, claim damage cost from the guilty party and send the car for service. It's the 3rd car accident this year alone and you know that these mishaps don't come cheap. I've spent a little over a thousand on repairs altogether. Long story short, no police reports and all 3 of us chose to settle the cost amicably. This morning, the workshop quoted me RM 220 for a paint job and tightening of components. After much thought, I gave the Sunway security guy a call and we met at a curry house in Sunway. While talking to him I assessed his situation. He twisted his pinky and bruised his knee. He has to pay for damages inflicted on the other car, his bike and now my car. Earning only RM 500 a month, I took pity on him and gave him 50% off. Besides, he did not crash into my car deliberately. My car happened to be at the wrong place and time. After a few minutes of chatter over a cup of teh ais courtesy of the Sunway security guy, case closed.

Life thus far...

Bebe and I got a pair of Robo hammies from Pet Lover's Center, Pyramid about 2 weeks ago. Wasn't easy to name these 2 furry rodents, more so when we've never named hammies before! 15 minutes of brain storming, we decided to name them Naruto and Sakura. No prizes for guessing who brought the names up. -_- We bought a small hamster cage cosy enough for 2. Complete with a hamster wheel, water dispenser, a house with a slide/staircase and a foodtray. As we sat down at home hoping for Naruto and Sakura to act all cute, they were unusually stiff. Not the behavior I expect out of hyper Robo hammies. I remembered swinging the cage about like shopping bags when we brought them home in the cage. Oops. All was good few days later. Bebe and I decided to share custody of the hammies. She takes care of them on weekdays while I do my part over the weekends and clean the cage.

A week back, I treated myself to another boy toy. A Redfox MP3 FM modulator for RM85. I had the obvious choice of getting it dirt cheap at Lowyat or Digital Mall. I chose Pyramid's Digital Center in the end. Why? It's near and assuming if the device cracks up, I can send it back for a replacement unit in the shortest time. No travel, save fuel. Whatever you may say about the extra few ringgit I had to fork out, I'm satisfied with my purchase. =)

KLUnity's anniversary dinner is coming up in 2 day's time. Looking forward catch up and revisit old faces.

Happenings and blahs...

Took me nearly a minute to start my sentence.. Goes to show just how long I've not blogged. In fact, I have no idea what motivated me to blog in the first place. Well, usually I'd blog when I have no one to talk to. I guess that's why I'm here. ~duh..~

Anyway. I've been busy as hell recently. Lost a few temper here and there. Hopefully none too serious. =P I need a long break.. to take my mind off worries and long hours at work. Ever since Mike left for Kuching, I've stopped meeting people and going places and doing crazy stuff. Fortunately, forth nightly meet ups with Stanley keeps my social balance in check.

KLU has taken a backseat. Pity. Sometimes I wonder how the kids at PECH are doing.

Oh.. I think I've figured what's bothering me. Friends. Or the lack of...

I browsed through friends' photo albums on friendster and facebook. My heart filled with envy as I looked at group photos of friends who've known each other since high school, vacationing somewhere. I used to experience that with Dysfunqtional. Now that Mike's not around, I lost that sense of belonging. Pity though cuz I've always had a blast with them. Doing crazy stuff at ungodly hours. Road trips. Booze. Takei sessions.

Congrats to Petster for having Amber grace their mag. Mike will probably tear his hair if he gets to know of the missed opportunity. =P

Recently, I rewarded myself with a DS Lite for the long hours I put into the CTCS project! It's the first Nintendo handheld I have since the original GameBoy. BTW, the GameBoy is still in perfect condition!!! (Save for the prehistoric dot matrix display...) GameBoy in Bebe's possession now. Don't forget to replace the 4 AA batteries when it's dry! Anyway, I had a hard time deciding between the DS Lite & PSP Slim & Lite initially. Read countless reviews. Asked numerous questions. Hands on. In the end, I spent 690 on an Onyx DS Lite, along with the R4DS, 30 free games of my choice, an attractive pouch and a crystal case. 2 weeks on, I knew why the DS Lite outsold the PSP. Games like March of the Mini Marios and Cooking Mama sets this gadget apart. I for one, am not into nauseating & confusing graphics intensive games. Simple, entertaining, interactive games are more like my cup of teh tarik. And the best part is, the games are free!!! Of course these are 'illegally' downloaded. Sadly, I noticed an assembly defect on the gadget. A barely visible gap on the hinge. =( Apart from that, everything else is flawless, so far.

There's more... but I shall save for another time. =)

Argghhh!!!

I never knew what busy and overwhelmed at work was until recently. Hordes of phone calls and requests come my way. There are times when everybody claims that their requests are 'critical' and wants them first. Really sien. My usual reaction is to put my head in my hands and exclaim. Really sucks to be caught in between. Lately I have resorted to yanking out the phone cord. Ah.. peace. It's not that I don't want to help but I can't concentrate on too many things at once. Seconds before I'm about to start on something, the phone & cellphone rings. "Daniel. bla bla bla here... This branch cannot do this do that. How? Please follow up." Easily 20 annoying calls a day. I have silenced my cellphone for more than a week. What used to be a beautiful ringtone now drives me up the wall everytime I hear it. Thank you for ruining "Every Day I Love You". More like "Every Day I Haunt You". On a brighter note, I consider myself fortunate to have much needed assistance from several people. If it weren't for them I'd go nuts. Thank you.

Mt KK

I came across some of the posts written by my fellow Mt KK troopers. Thus, it has inspired me to share my 2 cents on the trip as well, in a nutshell. You may check out their elaborate Mt KK posts:

What started off as a casual conversation on Mt KK by the BBQ pit at Sam's became a reality. Even I am surprised that the very first trip I have ever organized turned out to be rather successful. Though we had to endure months of suspense and anticipation before the trip. Needless to say I am relieved and beaming with pride. =D

We managed to accomplish most of the things we set out to do during the trip. Snorkeled at Pulau Sapi, seafood dinner at Port View Waterfront, conquered Mt Kinabalu, grilled fish for supper, Sunday Market at Gaya Street, walked along the sandy beaches of Tanjung Aru, visited Amy's old house.

The climb up Mt Kinabalu was especially meaningful to Amy and I cuz it was this trip that led us to where we are today. To reach Low's Peak together was an icing on the cake. A memory forever etched in my head.

-:We're on top of the world!:-

I wish to apologize to anybody whom may have been offended by words I've said and things I've done throughout the trip. I sincerely hope that everyone enjoyed themselves and all 10 of us get to go on another vacation perhaps?

P/S: Pardon the unimaginative title... I'm lost for words.

I had a blast!

Just when I thought my CNY was gonna be the same drab affair year in year out, I enjoyed this year's through and through.

CNY Eve:
Had reunion dinner at the un-likeliest of places. A Bali themed restaurant run and catered for the Malays (usually). Bora Asmara(!?), tucked in the heart of Kg Sg Penchala, amidst the atap houses and trunk roads. I love the interior decor, ambiance and theme. The same can't be said about the service and food tho. The staff at Bora Asmara probably started off running Malay food stalls around Kg Sg Penchala before they were handpicked by the owners to run the place. Didn't take a genius to figure out that they had no formal training in waitering. The food was horrendous and overpriced. Take Chicken chop for instance. The fillet came right out of the frozen food section in Carrefour/Tesco/Giant/Mydin. The coating to meat ratio was 2:1. The sides were pretty standard. Costs RM16.70 for that dish. For the same specs, it costs RM3.50 at my office cafeteria. Of course not all dishes were that bad but it's a jolly good idea to avoid international fare and stick to dishes they know best. My Nyonya Nasi Lemak was pretty good. My cousins wanted to do something different this CNY eve. The onus was on me to recommend a good place to chill out in Klang Valley not too far from where we were. Nothing came to mind so we ended up doing the same thing every CNY eve. Lepak at Granma's place.

CNY Day 1:
Woke up early to pray at the temple near Stadium Merdeka with my folks. Walked about an unusually deserted Petaling Street. Had lunch at Pavilion and checked out the place afterwards. Rudely chased away by the security guards when I stood next to the Jaguar X-Type on display on a leveled platform at the main entrance. No barricades, no signs. Heck, there were even stairs up the platform. Whose fault is it? Anyway, we walked over to an unusually quiet Sg Wang. For once I could walk in a straight line with my eyes closed and not bump into anyone. Spent the rest of the evening PC gaming and sleeping while the rest were caught up with TVB serials and mahjong. Had vegetarian dinner among the 4 of us. Went to bed early that night.

CNY Day 2
Had dinner in Sg Chua with Mom's side of the family. Hung out at eldest aunt's house. Gambled, cut cakes and watched TV. Watched CJ7 at Jusco Balakong 15 minutes before midnight. The movie was pretty good. However, do not compare CJ7 with Stephen Chow's finest slapstick flicks, you may walk out the theater unfulfilled.

CNY Day 3
Amy and I had a fun-filled day at Lake Gardens. The weather was sunny and breezy. Hopped on the tram that took us on a ride around Lake Gardens for RM0.50 each. Visited the deer and bird park. As we queued up for tickets to the bird park, I was appalled at the double standards practiced by the park management. Foreign tourist were charged differently from locals. They had to pay RM20.00 extra. The first question the ticket vendor asked me was, "Are you local?" -_- Those of you who've not been to the bird park, please do cuz it's a great place to hang out other than been-there-done-that shopping complexes or cafes. Really!

-:Amy & I:-

-:Yes Bambi. I am your father...:-

-:All smiles on a wonderful day:-

Invited Amy to join my folks at the mahjong table for a few rounds before we had steamboat dinner. Walked the dog. Had a lil' drama afterwards that lasted till the next day.

CNY Day 4
Distributed cookies with the PECH kids near GSC 1-U in the afternoon. A number of shoppers were hesitant to receive these freebies. In fact, some brushed us off before we could explain that we did not expect anything in return. I don't blame them after all the horrible experiences they've had with unscrupulous 'volunteers' in the past. The kids cheered each time they handed a cookie to a shopper and even kept scores. To them, it was only a game. Some felt discouraged after they were turned down several times. Once all 500 cookies were distributed, the club rewarded each kid to a Big Apple Donut. Amy and I stayed back to join my cousins at the bowling alley. Bought ourselves Chuppa Chups from a vending machine. Walked about 1-U and had 'dai chow' and durian in TTDI.

CNY Day 5
Back at work... T_T
