Next Gen OS: Google Chrome!

I like this. Computing made simple for the masses and the advantage of true portability. But then again, will our "narrowband" providers be able to handle cloud-computing in the not-so-distant future?

Halloween Slash Cyber Sports

My ever generous colleague Sunny organized yet another party at his place. Halloween being the obvious excuse this time. The lunch gang and ex-colleagues were invited. The itinerary was similar to the past few gatherings. Dinner, Wii, XBox and pool. Out of my own initiative, I volunteered to inject some Halloween flavor into the party. My plan was:

1) Bebe will dress as a witch while I turn up as a creepy old man.

Bebe the Witch caught shop-lifting at Memory Lane

You're 'screwed' if you try to squeeze your zits on the chin with a pair of pliers.

2) Bring along watermelons for carving.
3) Serve tortilla chips with salsa/guacamole dip in plastic doll abdomen.
4) Create a spider made of muffins, Rocky sticks, white choc chips and chocolate glue.
5) Serve Halloween treats in a Jack O' Lantern bucket.
A bucketful of joy!

Outcome:

1) Nobody dressed up so we didn't really dress up. We did wear the mask and the witch hat on several occasions tho.

2) The watermelon carving certainly made a difference to the atmosphere!

3) I couldn't find all the ingredients to prepare the dips. Running short of time, I grabbed 2 jars of MasterFoods pre-made Salsa and Guacamole dips at Cold Storage. Coming to the plastic doll, I was dismayed that plastic dolls don't come cheap these days. I was looking at something in the region of 15 to 20 bucks. Instead, I opted for mini witch pots to accommodate the dips. The tortilla chips and dip turned out to be a hit with the crowd!

4) The muffin spider was an epic fail. There were plenty to learn from this failure tho.

5) The treats were simply good. I do admit that the caramel was rather sweet.

All of us were given a non-permanent tattoo which Bebe and I received F.O.C. from Toys R' Us Suria KLCC when I bought the rubber mask. Brill!
!OOB

After hours of Wii Sports, the results were finally announced. Even though it was a close fight between my team and the opposition, my team lost and were penalized. The penalty? Drink a huge glass of red-ish concoction prepared by the ladies. What was supposed to be a nasty experience turned out to be pleasant! The opposition were fuming mad of course.
Yes, that mad.

All in all it was a Halloween that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Garmin Mobile XT on the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

After reading the much talked about Garmin Mobile XT installed on the 5800, I decided to give it a try. Nokia Maps was pretty limited in functionality. Turn-by-turn & voice navigation requires purchasing of license. Price depends on the subscription period. Wanna install Garmin Mobile XT on your mobile F.O.C.? Check this out!

Sunday morning rain is pouring

I was supposed to hike Gasing Hill this morning with Bebe, Kai Lee and the organizer Malcolm as part of his training before taking on Gunung Ledang. The morning drizzle however put a dampener on our plans. After breakfast at Raju's, we took a drive to Amcorp Mall since we were in that area.

The mall wasn't opened yet, but the Sunday Flea Market had begun to draw crowds. There was a wide assortment of stuff from ais kacang machines, vinyl records, plants and toys. We stopped by a bookstore located at the top most level next to an internet cafe. Books on sale were cheaper than what you can find in other major bookstores such as MPH and Kinokuniya. The best part is, these books carry the latest titles such as the recent bibliography by Sir Jackie Stewart who paid an official visit to the PM. The 3 of them were avid book readers while I loathe the thought of flipping through books. They spent a solid hour in the bookstore while I took the opportunity to wander off on my own.

Just before we left the bookstore, I came across a children's book illustrating the "birds and the bees". The book was called "WHERE WILLY WENT: THE BIG STORY OF A LITTLE SPERM" by Nicholas Allen.

A quick synopsis:

Willy is a little sperm who lives inside Mr Browne with 300 million other sperm, but not for much longer.. The Great Swimming Race is fast approaching and there is only one prize. Willy knows he will have to practise every day and be a super speedy swimmer to beat all the others and win the magical egg.. A very funny story about the facts of life for young children

This book is handy for parents who are tight-lipped whenever kids ask them where they came from. Beats telling the kids that they were picked up from the garbage dump!

Craving satisfied: The Nokia 5800 XPressMusic

Working in the IT industry, I am surrounded by people who are very much into the latest and coolest gadgets. I'm one of them. At lunch in a WiFi hotspot, my colleagues will whip out their HTCs and iPhones, leaving the rest of us at the table with WiFi-less phones feeling somewhat left out. I've always wanted to own the iPhone but when I look at how much it will cost, I put that thought on hold. I believe I'm not alone in this respect.

After many months of patience and prudence, I decided to settle for something that doesn't burn a hole in my wallet. It's gotta have WiFi of course, an application store and pretty much everything bundled into the device. The Nokia E71 caught my attention when I read raving reviews on the full QWERTY business centric phone.

Nokia E71. Pity the screen size is small and yet price tag still expensive.

And then I stumbled upon the Nokia 5730 XPressMusic which, I was so close to buying until I 'fondled' the actual device.

Nokia 5730 XPressMusic. If only the build quality was as good as it looks.

The build was very poor and the plastics felt cheap in comparison to my current Sony Ericsson Z610i (btw this is a damn good phone for daily usage. Snappy, beautiful and practical. Sadly no WiFi). I felt uneasy with the rigid sliding mechanism of the 5730. Never know when the unit will pop and drop to the ground. The QWERTY keyboard, supposed to be the selling point of this device, was disappointing. The keys were flat and in-distinctive that the device slowed my input to a crawl instead of speeding up as it's meant to do. The 2.4" screen was small and unimpressive for a multimedia device.

Just when I thought I was gonna leave the store empty handed, I spotted the Nokia 5800 XPressMusic next to the Nokia 5730 XPressMusic test unit. The 5800 was a better deal. It had a 3.2" resistive touchscreen and had all the features the 5730 had in a better built and attractive device. What's more, the 5800 (RM 1280.00) is cheaper than the 5730 (RM 1350.00)! I do admit however, the 5800 is less intuitive and easy to use than the noob-friendly iPhone. The UI wasn't as responsive as I hoped for but I believe it is a matter of time before "I become one with the 5800" (pardon the Zen-ish metaphor). After much deliberation with Bebe who had agreed to accompany me that evening to the Nokia Care Center in Sunway Pyramid, I went ahead with the purchase. I felt so relieved. It's like waste disposal on the crapper after holding it back for days.

Nokia 5800 XPressMusic. All-in-1 marvel.

The Nokia 5800 XPressMusic package:
  • 3-pin charger
  • Earphone with playback controls
  • Plectrum that serves as an alternative to the conventional stylus
  • Ovi Suite mini CD and guide
  • 1000 free music downloads scratch card from bimbit.com
  • Wrist strap
  • Spare stylus
  • Instruction manuals
  • Apology note from Nokia that states new batches of 5800 don't come with TV-out function due to reasons unknown.
  • Li-Ion 1320 mAh(BL-5J) battery
  • 8GB MicroSD card
  • USB cable
  • Tilted horizontal cradle for watching videos on a flat surface

Likes

  • Nokia's bundled web browser supports flash and YouTube. When I watched YouTube for the first time on my phone, I was elated! The AV quality was good and I was surprised how fast the video loaded.
  • In terms of appearance, it is an attractive looking device IMO.
  • Battery life is good with normal usage. May last 3-4 days.
  • Web browsing is a joy on the Nokia web brower in landscape mode.
  • The 5800 XPressMusic does what it does best. Music. The speakers are loud and clear. Sound quality is good and gets even better if a pair of quality headphones are plugged into the 3.5mm jack.
  • The 3.2 MP, Carl Zeiss optics, LED flash camera was OK for me since the 2.0 MP, Carl Zeiss-less optics, LED flash-less camera I had on my Z610i did a decent job with spur-of-the-moment photography.
  • Nokia Ovi Service. Nokia's answer to the Apple App Store. This is one of the many reasons why I chose to get a Nokia instead of an HTC or Samsung. The Ovi Store is a convenience many would come to appreciate. Instead of sourcing from 3rd party app developers all over the place. The Ovi Store provides all these apps in 1 place. The current selection of applications may be somewhat limited but it has potential to grow if Nokia takes the Ovi Store seriously. Apart from application downloads, Ovi also offers Ovi Mail, Share, Maps, Contacts, Calendar, File Storage.
  • It has GPS! I have yet to fully explore the GPS feature in the "Tube". Hopefully, this will save the need to buy a Garmin 205W I've been yearning for.

Dislikes
  • I am not pleased with the quality of the stylus. The plastic 'toothpick' may snap into 2 if a little more pressure is applied. The rough edges on the stylus are worrisome too as it may leave permanent scratches on the touch screen. Cost cutting measure I suppose. I will apply a screen protector soon.
  • I am not a fan of resistive screens. At times, the phone fails to respond to my inputs if insufficient pressure is applied.
  • Navigating the UI can be confusing. Certain menu items require single taps while some need double taps. The same goes for scrolling directions. Touch input took awhile to master but I'm already getting the hang of it into my 3rd day with the "Tube" as the 5800 is fondly known as.
  • Doesn't support both contacts and live widgets on the home screen.
  • 1000 free music download song selection is disappointing but not unexpected. A lot of emphasis given to local artistes, oldies and very few latest international artistes.
  • Removal of SIM card is a chore. The back cover and battery must be removed before using a stylus to push the SIM card out of the SIM slot.
  • Popping the back cover is a nerve wrecking experience. I won't be surprised to find bits and pieces of broken plastic dropping from the phone some day.
  • The absence of dedicated keys for playback on the 5800 forces me to constantly unlock the touch screen to pause or skip tracks. The 5800 does have a volume rocker though.
  • I confess the 5800 XPressMusic does not turn as many heads as it used to since early 2009. In fact, my colleagues were quick to dismiss my phone as an iPhone wannabe before turning their attention back to the iPhone 3GS. Hmmph!

Arthur's Day @ Black Eyed Peas Day

The Black Eyed Peas Ditched New York for Malaysia!

When I got wind that the Black Eyed Peas would perform at the Arthur's Day celebration in Sunway Lagoon, I wasted no time in purchasing 2 tickets online at Axcess Tickets. I got an early bird 10% off my purchase. I am a huge BEP fan and that is reflected in the number of tracks I have in my collection and how often I listen to them.

The ticket collection booths were open 2 hours prior to showtime and boy Bebe & I were mighty glad we collected our tickets a little later cuz everyone else had gotten theirs earlier. No need to queue. Heh!

The area where the fountain is was filled with people dressed in black party chic which by the way was the dress code for the evening. Knowing in advance that F&B inside Lagoon will be scarce and overpriced, we had our dinner at Jusco and attempted to smuggle 2 bottles of mineral water past the gates. Sadly we had to surrender them over to the security personnel. After we had our temperatures taken by some pretty hot ladies to check for H1N1, it was a long and winding journey towards the concert grounds.

Thanks Arthur for giving us an excuse to 'partay' with the Black Eyed Peas!

If only we were greeted with this much enthusiasm at the concert grounds....

As we entered a tunnel of sorts, we saw but never bothered to examine the exhibits of Guinness and Arthur that were displayed on the wall. After all, just like everyone else, I was there for the BEPs! No offense but, it felt more like "Black Eyed Peas Day" than Arthur's!

The area smack right in front of the stage was already packed to the brim. Fortunately, we found a spot by the media barricade, positioned dead center facing the stage.

Bebe mighty pleased with the nice unobstructed view!

The elevated ground also did wonders to improve visibility. No need to tiptoe. Typical Malaysian timing, the concert kicked off 1/2 an hour late with JJ, Serena C (I couldn't recognize her at first glance cuz she bleached her hair blonde!) and Moots on stage as MCs for the evening. The first act was local rapper, producer & actor, Danny One(who?) He did a great job getting the crowd warmed up for the-one-too-many asian acts we were about to endure in the next few hours such as ManHand, Reshmonu, DJ Haze.

All was well until Joe Flizzow appeared onstage. This fella totally killed off the party atmosphere with his poor selection of "gangsta raps". Beats were non-existent and there wasn't much crowd interaction. The crowd soon got tired of his "I think my rapping is hawt stuff" mentality and some among the crowd were on the verge of boo-ing him off stage. I took the rare opportunity to catch a little shut eye. Joe Flizzow is no doubt a talented artiste/ rapper. Pity he had to mess up his segment.

The crowd found their feet again with the next performance by one of the hottest acts from Taiwan (Or so they say...) MJ116 and MC HotDog. Their performance was commendable but I quietly wished the BEPs would just appear on stage pronto!! My patience was already wearing dangerously thin.

At long last, the BEP stage crew appeared onstage at 10:30pm. 10 minutes or so were spent on equipment setup, sound test and security checks. The crowd went absolutely nuts when Will.I.Am, Fergie, Taboo & Apl.De.Ap appeared for the first time after many hours of "fillers".

L-R: Will.I.Am, Taboo & Apl.De.Ap (Fergie not in the picture)

The BEP got the party started with, "Lets Get It Started" of course! Or was it "Lets Get Retarded" cuz the lyrics had a little bit of both versions? Fergie's voice on the microphone was funny that night. If that wasn't bad enough, the microphone wasn't working when she started singing. Anyway, the BEPs sure knew how to command the crowd with hits such as:
  • "Meet Me Halfway",
  • "Shut Up",
  • "Don't Phunk With My Heart",
  • "Pump It",
  • New single "Imma Be"
  • Fergie's solo "Big Girls Don't Cry",
  • "Where Is The Love",
  • "Boom Boom Pow"
  • and a climatic end to the night with crowd favorite "I've Got A Feeling".

Will.I.Am did a little DJ gig armed with a Macbook and a turntable. When he spun hits from other artistes such as Kanye West, Michael Jackson, Blur... the crowd was puzzled.

"Are we here to listen to BEP songs, or songs played by the BEPs?"

No matter cuz Will.I.Am did a superb job behind the decks. Arthur's Day Malaysia concluded with a bang. A 5 minute fireworks display signaled the end of a worldwide celebration in 5 major cities, 36 hours non-stop all in the name of celebrating Arthur's Day which marks the 250th anniversary since Irish brewer Arthur Guinness went into the business by signing a lease on a four-acre Saint James’ Gate brewery in Dublin, Ireland.

Throughout the concert, Bebe and I were parched from the absence of water boys/girls who, rightfully should serve us drinks between intervals. Although I was disappointed that Guinness wasn't free flow, the access to free mineral water was just downright ridiculous. Shouldn't my pricey ticket entitle me to one bottle at least? Just next to the concert premises, chilled bottled mineral water and canned Coke were sold at........... RM 5 each!!! WTF? Damn opportunists. Considering that life & death was above everything else, I 'gladly' parted with RM10. Just as we approached the exit, un-chilled bottled water was handed to us F.O.C. WTF?

Not the Monday I was hoping for + Movies!

The past month had been hectic and can sometimes be downright stifling in the office. Often times I wished that I could stay at home on a working weekday and do whatever my heart desires. I can take a nap when I felt like it or simply while away the entire day gaming or watching movies. I did all that today, and I came away feeling somewhat disappointed. In short, I’m bored! I watched probably one of the best sci-fi horror movies of the 80’s. The Fly.

Yes, be afraid of the lalat...

Quirky 80's hair-do and primitive effects (at this time and age) aside, it’s a pretty good horror flick. RottenTomatoes rate the movie 91% Fresh rating on the TomatoMeter. Looking forward to the sequel which I have begun downloading and will complete in the next few days, no thanks to the so-so download speeds I’ve been getting!

Who knew this would turn out to be a sleeper-hit!?

I watched Up! with Bebe on Friday night at TGV Sunway Pyramid and boy were we mighty glad we did. The opening sequences tugged at my emotional strings, wringed my tear ducts and tickled my funny bone. No other Disney Pixar film had that much impact on me, save for perhaps The Incredibles. The movie trailers didn’t expose the plot of the story apart from the house lifting into the air. Beyond that, nobody would’ve guessed where the story would lead to. RottenTomatoes.com certified this movie 98% Fresh on the TomatoMeter. That’s an admirable feat considering the other summer blockbusters Transformers 2 & Terminator Salvation failed to get anywhere near that high score. In a nutshell, this movie is a must-see!

What next? District 9.

A Dog Named Bobo/Happy/Lucky/Whatever

My aunt, Jaclyn mentioned that there was an abandoned male mongrel that needed an owner. The dog had been wandering about her neighborhood for weeks until her neighbor decided to take the dog in. Barely a week later, the neighbor couldn't stand the dog cuz the furry fella loves the outdoors and refuses to stay in the compound. The first thing he does when the gates open is to dash out and never to return until many hours later. The neighbor didn't want to be held liable should the dog rummage other neighbors' garbage or worse, bite passerbys. Bebe had been looking for a companion for Bubble, a female mongrel that Bebe has raised since it was a puppy, for quite some time.

Together with Aunt Jaclyn, we checked out the dog at the neighbor's house. The dog gelled easily with strangers and we loved how friendly it was. It appeared to be a cross between a husky and some other breed. Since Bebe and I were in a hurry to attend Mom's B'day steamboat dinner at Tasty Pots, Mentari, we promised the neighbor to pick the dog up after dinner. 2 hours later, we were greeted by the neighbor's husband who handed the dog over to us. I popped the trunk of Bebe's Kembara and coaxed the dog to hop on but to no avail. I had to lift it up even though I ran the risk of having my face mauled by this creature whose real temperament we were uncertain of. With my face still intact, we hurried off to Bebe's house. I was behind the wheel while Bebe held on to the whining dog in the backseat. After we unloaded the dog into Bebe's compound, the dog's presence wasn't welcomed by Bubble, naturally. We had to introduce both dogs to each other gradually until they were comfortable. Bebe noticed that the dog came with a collar that had been around its neck, untouched for quite some time. The dog had outgrown the collar and we knew we had to remove it quick lest it suffocates in the long run. The collar was impossible to unbuckle due to what could possibly be months or even years of neglect. I had no choice but to snip the collar with a pair of kitchen scissors.

It took us a day or two to name him. Bobo, Lucky, Happy... and our decision is still divided to this day. Bebe's choice was Happy while I felt Bobo was catchy. In the end, we decided to merge both choices and his full name is Happy Bobo! Happy Bobo may be cute and all, but he can be a pain in the arm sometimes, literally (Happy Bobo bit Bebe's Mom on Day 2 and had to receive treatment at the hospital). His time in the wilderness has made him difficult to tame. Commands and yelling don't seem to work on Happy Bobo. His habits of dashing out of the house, occasionally snapping and growling at us, marking his territory around his meal bowl drive us up the wall. We can only hope he'll settle down real quick and know who's the boss! Bad dog!

Happy Pondans

There was a time months ago when I bought a pack of Chipsmore to restock my office supply. There was a Chipsmore contest and all I had to do was answer some dead simple questions. And the best part was, NO SLOGANS! Few weeks later my name was on the winners list. It did took awhile for my prize to arrive. 2 tickets to Aquaria, an Aquaria T-shirt and a spanking brand new G-Shock G300.

Flash-less shots require dead stiff hands

Bebe and I checked out Aquaria last weekend since we had nothing planned that Sunday. Even though the tickets were free we still had to queue up like the paying crowd. There I was expecting an express lane. Upon entry, we got to touch several creatures in the "DNA pool". Baby sharks, shoe crabs, star fishes and an eerie looking sea cucumber.

Makes you wonder what goes on underneath

We also had a good look at a tank full of piranhas. They didn't appear to be as menacing as I imagined from movies and cartoons. The absence of visible long razor sharp teeth made me wonder if Aquaria substituted piranhas with ikan bawal (Silver Pomfret) to cut cost.

Do they taste as good as soy sauce ikan bawal?

I didn't expect much from the exhibition since I've been to quite a number of marine exhibitions in my lifetime. I was so wrong. There were many species of fishes, amphibians, insects and mammals that I never knew existed. Real cool. I will let the photos do the talking.

Prehistoric-looking tortoise

Snake-like neck

Poison Dart Frog (the world's deadliest frog)

Gamabunta

Evil gleaming from its eyes

This will look real fine at home

Bebe posing with a flying turtle

Admiring shark butt holes

Bebe and I walked away dazed from taking in all these weird and fascinating creatures. I absolutely recommend this place!
